Can Descript Translate Into Other Languages?

Descript automatically takes the video or audio files you give it and transcribes them. And it can do this in 23 different languages.

Step 1: Transcribe

The first step to translating your project is to transcribe it in the source language. To do this, import your file into Descript by clicking the Upload a File button or dragging the file into the Descript window and dropping it.

From there, you'll get a prompt that will ask you what language you want to transcribe it in. Select the language of the file.

Step 2: Edit Your Transcription

From there, edit your transcription for spelling, make your cuts, and any other changes you need to make to get it looking how you want.

Step 3: Translate Your Transcription

Next, click on Underlord in the top right of the Descript window (Underlord is all of Descript's AI features.)

Then, scroll down to the "Repurpose" section and click on "Translate." (Note: It's in Beta at the time of this writing so it doesn't always work perfectly.)

From here, you'll choose which language you want to turn your project into.

For demonstration purposes, I'll choose German.

Next, if you want to dub your voice into another language:

• Toggle on Dub Speech
• Select an AI Speaker
• Click Submit

Note: In order to use the Dub Speech feature, you have to have trained your AI Speaker voice so it knows what you sound like. Training your AI Voice is covered at length in the Descript Course.

If you don't need the audio dubbed, leave Dub Speech off. Hit Submit.

Your Translation is Complete!

Within a few seconds - or up to a couple minutes depending on the size of your project - you should see something like this:

On the left side, I have the original language. And on the right side, the translated transcription, now in German. 

And - since I turned Dub Speech on - I can hit the play buttons above each paragraph to hear the translated audio.

From here, you can export your project in the original or translated language, you can export subtitles, you can export the transcript, or you can start translating it into even more languages!

The Implications 

The implications of this are absolutely bonkers.

If you're an English speaker (presumably you are since you're reading this in English 😜), you are no longer limited to the 1.5 billion English speakers on Earth. 

I've taken my top performing Youtube videos and translated them into Spanish, German, French, and Italian and posted the subtitles to Youtube and seen a spike in viewership amongst those audiences. This is incredible powerful for broadening your audience globally.
