Microphone Options for Your YouTube Videos

Picking the right microphone for Youtube can feel really hard! There are so many microphones out there. But don't worry, I can help! Below, I'll tell you about my favorite microphones for Youtube.

1. Using Your Smartphone's Microphone

  • Smartphone: This is the simplest way to get started. You can begin making podcasts or videos with just your phone. It works fine and there's no need to buy anything extra.
  • Pros and Cons:
    • Pros: It's free if you have a smartphone.
    • Cons: It picks up a lot of background noise like birds or cars. It's not a high-quality mic.

2. Upgrading to Headphones and Laptop Mics

  • Headphones like AirPods: These often have better microphones than your laptop’s built-in mic.
  • Built-in Laptop Mic: You can also use the mic in your laptop, but it's not as good. Your voice might sound hollow.

3. The Rode NT USB Mini Microphone (USB Condenser mic)

  • Rode NT USB Mini: This is a small microphone that connects to a cell phone, laptop, tablet, or any other USB-C device. It sounds good if placed close to your mouth. Using a mic arm for it is helpful.
  • Mic Arm: This holds your mic close to you. Some are cheap but better ones reduce noise if you bump your desk.

4. Understanding Mic Types: Dynamic vs. Condenser

  • Condenser Mic: Sensitive and captures lots of surrounding sounds. Good for quiet places.
  • Dynamic Mic: Focuses on sounds directly in front. Better for lively places with background noise.

5. The Rode PodMic USB

  • Rode PodMic USB: This is a heavy-duty dynamic mic. It connects via USB or an XLR cable, which is big and tough. If you upgrade later, this mic can grow with you.

6. Exploring Wireless Microphones

  • DJI Mics: These include a set with a receiver and two microphones. Great for interviews, they work with many devices and store lots of audio.
  • Hollyland Lark M2: Small, light, and easy to hide. Big YouTubers use these. They're a bit cheaper than some other choices but work well.

7. The Rode Video Mic

  • Rode Video Mic: Mounts on a camera and picks up sound from in front. You need to turn it on, which some find inconvenient. But it works if you need a mic that isn't seen.
